Brief Description

The expertise of my research group lies, primarily, in computational protein sequence analysis. Seeking to diagnose structural, functional and family relationships of un-characterised proteins, I established the PRINTS(1,2) fingerprint database; with PROSITE, this was a founding partner of InterPro(3), now the world’s largest, unified protein family resource, playing a pivotal role in genome sequence annotation. I have also pioneered the design of tools to align and visualise protein sequences and structures (e.g., the CINEMA alignment editor(4)), and to annotate protein families (e.g., PRECIS(5) and MINOTAUR(a)). I have led a number of major projects, such as the EU EMBER(b) bioinformatics education consortium; the EPSRC PARADIGM Platform, which provided under-pinning funds for Manchester's bioinformatics groups; the EU BioMinT(c) text-mining consortium; and the BBSRC literature-mining project, MINOTAUR. I led the bioinformatics component of the EPSRC/DTI-funded UTOPIA(d) project to develop protein sequence and structure visualisation tools (6,7); I am also the Manchester PI on EU projects EMBRACE(e), on standards for bioinformatics data exchange, and IMPACT(f), on streamlining protein family annotation. I also lead the Semantic Biochemical Journal project, funded by Portland Press Limited(8), and the KTA Secondment Fellowship award funded by Pfizer, AstraZeneca and the EPSRC. I have been a Visiting Fellow at the European Bioinformatics Institute since 1997, where part of my group is still based.
