The Nephrology Section of the University Hospital Gent is a large clinical department with an outpatient clinic for follow-up of stage 1-4 Chronic Kidney Disease, four hemodialysis units treating approximately 230 patients, a transplantation unit performing 100 transplants per year, a PD program covering some 50 patients and an activity in acute kidney injury, offering acute dialysis to 150-200 patients a year. Research activities focus mainly on clinical issues and are concentrated on: the patho-physiology of chronic kidney disease and uremia; cardio-vascular risk in uremia; removal of uremic toxins by dialysis; dialysis kinetics; epidemiology of chronic kidney disease; acute kidney injury. Members of the group are part of several international networks such as the European Uremic toxin Work Group (EUTox, for the study of uremia); European Renal Best Practice (ERBP) for the development of nephrologic recommendations; and the Renal Disaster Relief Task Force (RDRTF) for humanitarian help in disasters.
