Brief Description

Born in Egypt, trained and qualified from Geneva Medical School, Switzerland. Subsequently, trained in Boston (Massachusetts General Hospital; Residency) and London (Hammersmith hospital, PhD studies) as well as the Royal Free hospital (Registrar) and Cardiff (Senior Registrar/lecturer) before being appointed consultant renal physician in Sheffield in 1986. In 1996, Professor of Nephrology and Head of the Academic Nephrology Unit at the Sheffield Kidney Institute, University of Sheffield.
Professor El Nahas chaired the British Renal Association International Committee and is a member of a number of international committees and advisory bodies including: ISN COMGAN: Research, Sister Renal Centers, Africa and Middle East Committees.
He is the Regional Research Coordinator for ISN COMGAN for the Middle East and the Mediterranean Region.
He is on the Nephrology advisory board of the UK Department of Health MHRA and is an expert to the EMEA. He is also involved as a CKD expert in WHO-Harvard Global Burden of Disease (GBD) project.
Professor El Nahas has a long standing interest in research into CKD with emphasis on mechanisms of kidney response to injury and remodelling as well as fibrosis. More recently, he has developed in Sheffield a program for early detection of CKD in communities as well as the study of the impact of social deprivation on CKD.
Professor El Nahas is/has been lead UK investigator for a number of clinical trials.
Professor El Nahas has/is serving on the editorial board of most nephrology journals. He is the current editor of Nephron Clinical Practice.
He has published over 150 peer-reviewed papers and numerous chapters for major textbooks.
