- Brief Description
Vlahou received her BS from the School of Biology, University of Athens, Greece and her Ph.D from the Department of Cell Biology, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas. Vlahou pursued post-doctoral studies at the Eastern VA Medical School, USA, where she was appointed as a research assistant professor from 2001 to 2003 when she moved to the Biomedical Research Foundation, Academy of Athens (BRFAA), Greece. Vlahou is currently the co-Director of the Proteomics Research Unit at BRFAA. Vlahou is one of the founding members and currently the President of the Hellenic Proteomics Society. For her studies, she currently receives funding from the Greek Department of Health and the FP7 program DECanBio.
The research interests of Vlahou’s group include: a) Identification of urinary biomarkers for bladder cancer and other urogenital diseases by the use of comprehensive two-dimensional electrophoresis and MS- based approaches; b) Identification of proteins involved in the acquisition of cell aggressive phenotype. There is special interest in the characterization of secreted proteins and for their study cell line and animal models for aggressive bladder cancer are employed.
